Los Altos Hills lots are big, an acre minimum in most of town, and the ranch homes from the fifties through the seventies came with outbuildings. Workshops, pool sheds, barns, and now a growing number of ADUs. Every one of those structures seems to have inherited a refrigerator at some point, and the durable ones that survive out there are very often Admirals.

An Admiral in a workshop or ADU on Page Mill Road or off Moody Road works in real conditions, temperature swings, sawdust, long stretches without anyone opening the door. Those conditions produce specific failures, and I would rather diagnose the actual fault than start swapping parts. Since Admiral parts flowed into Maytag and then Whirlpool, I can usually match a forty year old component to a current number. The exception is cosmetic trim, which nobody makes anymore, but mechanically these units can almost always be kept alive.

Bimetal defrost thermostat stuck open. The small bimetal disc clipped to the evaporator tells the heater when to run, and when it fails open the defrost cycle never fires. Frost slowly buries the evaporator and cooling fades. It is a cheap part and a common Admiral failure, but it hides behind the freezer panel, so people replace timers and boards first and get nowhere. I test it cold with a meter, which settles the question in one visit.
Evaporator fan noise then no airflow. Workshop dust and the occasional ice buildup wear the evaporator fan bearings. You hear a growl or chirp for a few weeks, then silence and a warm fresh food section. I replace the motor and also check why ice reached the fan in the first place, because a fan killed by ice means there is a defrost problem underneath.
Door gasket and hinge wear on outbuilding units. Units in sheds and ADUs get their doors leaned on and slammed, and Admiral hinge cams and gaskets take the abuse. A door that pops open on its own or will not self-close costs you energy and food. New gasket, new hinge cam, and a cabinet leveling usually restores a proper seal in one stop.
