About 35 minutes through the Caldecott on 24, a bit more to deep East Oakland. We route Oakland together with Piedmont and Berkeley, so we are on that side of the hills most days and can usually book you within a day or two.

The fridge is in an upstairs unit with narrow stairs. Does that matter for repair?

Almost never. Refrigerator repair happens in place, in the kitchen. I bring the parts and tools to the unit, so the narrow Oakland staircases that make delivery a nightmare are irrelevant for a repair visit.

Can you give my tenant a window so they do not wait home all day?

In the bungalows of Fruitvale and Maxwell Park, the duplexes around Grand Lake, and the flats off Telegraph, we find Whirlpool-built 106 units that have run for two decades, often in a rental unit where nobody knows the machine's history. That is fine. The model tag tells me everything the missing paperwork would.

Kenmore was a Sears label, never a factory, so the badge on the door means nothing until I decode who built the unit underneath. Whirlpool builds dominate older Oakland kitchens, with LG-built 795 Elites showing up in remodeled units and newer condos near Jack London. The failure patterns and part prices are completely different between the two.

Defrost heater burnout on Whirlpool-built units. The glass-tube defrost heater in older 106 Kenmores eventually burns out, and frost slowly walls off the evaporator. The freezer keeps freezing but the fridge section drifts warm over a week or two. Heater, defrost thermostat, and timer get tested together, because replacing one while another is marginal means a callback nobody wants.
Door gaskets and hinges worn out in high-use rentals. Oakland rental units put hard miles on refrigerator doors. Torn gaskets and sagging hinges let warm moist air in, which shows up as frost, condensation, and a compressor that never rests. Gasket and hinge work is inexpensive and adds real years to a unit a landlord does not want to replace.
Linear compressor failure on 795 Elite models. The LG-built Kenmore Elites fail at the linear compressor often enough that I check it first on any warm 795. Confirming it takes real measurements, not a glance. If the compressor is gone, the repair is sealed system work under our two year warranty, done with EPA-certified refrigerant handling.
