Water inlet valve leaks behind side-by-side units. On the older 106 side-by-sides the dual water valve serving the ice maker and dispenser starts weeping with age. In Pleasanton's slab-floor tracts that slow leak wicks under flooring before anyone notices. Slow ice or a musty smell behind the fridge is the early warning, and the valve is a quick, inexpensive swap.
Adaptive defrost board faults on 90s and 2000s units. When a Whirlpool-built Kenmore ices over on an irregular schedule, the adaptive defrost control board is the usual suspect. I force a defrost cycle and test the heater circuit through the board, which separates a board failure from a heater or thermostat failure in one visit instead of two.
