What breaks. What we fix.
Summit is Felix Storch, a family shop out of the Bronx that has owned the compact-refrigeration niche for decades. You find Summit wherever a full-size fridge won’t fit: ADU kitchens, garages, break rooms, apartments, wet bars, and outdoor kitchens. It’s honest mid-market hardware, and nearly all of it is worth fixing.
The calls we get on Summit
The install kills more Summits than the fridge does. Someone buys a freestanding compact and shoves it into a cabinet cutout with no air clearance. The compressor runs hot for years, then starts short-cycling on the overload, then won’t restart at all. Caught early, it’s a relay-and-overload swap plus opening up the airflow. Caught late, you’re into a compressor, and on a compact that’s a straight repair-or-replace talk. Summit’s true built-in models vent out the front and tolerate the enclosure, so we check which one you actually have before anyone blames the machine.
Door gaskets are next. Undercounter doors get bumped shut with a knee, the gasket splits at the bottom corner, and the box either frosts up or runs nonstop. Cold controls and thermostats drift with age, showing up as a unit that freezes everything or won’t cool at all. Evaporator and condenser fan motors load up with dust and floor grime, and a stalled fan looks exactly like a refrigeration failure until you open it up.
Outdoor units have their own pattern. The cabinet is built for it, but coastal air and UV still go after the fan motor, the hinges, and the gasket. Near the water, corrosion is the first place we look.
What each fix runs
Ballpark, with a firm number after the $75 diagnostic that’s credited toward the repair:
- Relay and overload plus airflow fix: usually the cheapest way out, often under $250.
- Door gasket: modest part, about an hour.
- Cold control or thermostat: moderate part, one visit.
- Fan motor: mid-range part, one visit.
- Compressor: the big one, and on a compact it’s where replacing the whole unit can make more sense.
Repair or replace
Most Summit calls land on the cheap side, so repair usually wins. The exception is a dead compressor on an older compact, where a new unit can cost about what the repair does. We pull built-in and undercounter fridges out of cabinetry every week on U-Line, so Summit gets the same careful hands, and we service their beverage centers and wine cellars alongside the Zephyr Presrv line. Compact ranges and cooktops fall under our cooking-appliance work.
Workmanship carries our standard warranty: 90 days on consumables, one year on major parts, two years on sealed-system work. $75 diagnostic, credited toward the repair. Schedule a visit.
