What breaks. What we fix.
Most of the Maytag in Bay Area homes is laundry. Bravos top-load washers and Centennial dryers make up the bulk of what we get called on, with top-freezer fridges, freestanding ranges, and dishwashers behind them. Maytag rides on Whirlpool’s parts platform now, and that’s good news for you: parts are everywhere and cheap, so a lot of these repairs are one trip.
The calls we get on Maytag
Bravos that won’t start. Nine times out of ten it’s the lid switch. The lid clicks, the motor hums, no wash. Twenty-minute swap, part’s on the truck.
Bravos that howls and walks across the floor on spin. That’s the gearbox bearing, and by the time it screams the basket spider is usually chewed up with it. This is the big Maytag ticket. We don’t touch the bearing alone because it comes right back in six months; we go through the gearbox and spider together.
Centennial dryer that turns but drags or squeals. Drum glides, belt, idler pulley. We do all three as a set, because pulling the drum twice to fix them one at a time is double the labor. Two hours, one visit.
Top-freezer fridge (MRT, MFI) warming up. Defrost thermostat or the evaporator fan motor. Cheap parts, thirty-minute swaps, both on the truck.
Range not heating (MGR gas, MER electric). Gas side it’s the surface igniter. Electric side it’s the bake element. If an electric oven runs cold we read the oven sensor (RTD) resistance before we blame the control board.
Dishwasher not filling or leaking. Water inlet valve or door latch switch. Stocked parts, one call.
What each fix runs
Lid switch, defrost thermostat, evap fan, inlet valve, oven igniter, bake element: these are the cheap end, part plus labor on a single visit. The gearbox-and-spider job on a Bravos is the one where price actually matters, and it’s the one where we do the repair-or-replace math with you out loud before ordering anything.
Repair or replace
Honest read: Maytag laundry is worth fixing when the machine’s under about eight years old or the failed part is cheap. Parts are common, so you’re rarely waiting on a special order. The exception is a high-mile Bravos with a dead gearbox. That’s the one where we hand you the numbers and tell you to think hard about a new machine instead.
We charge $75 to come out and find the fault. That’s credited to the repair. Once we know what failed, you get the price in writing and a straight repair-or-replace call. No parts ordered until you say go. Schedule a visit.

Maytag questions, answered.
-
My Bravos washer won't start. Lid won't lock. What is it?
Lid switch failure. The lid will not lock, the wash will not start. Switch is on the truck. Single-visit, 20-minute fix. -
My Bravos is wobbling and howling on spin. Is it the bearing?
Yes, and probably the gearbox. By the time the bearing screams, the gearbox and basket spider are both compromised. We quote the full gearbox-and-spider job because doing the bearing alone leads to a callback. Honest math against new-unit cost happens before parts get ordered. -
My Centennial dryer drum drags and the motor whines. Why?
Drum-glide bearings and the drive belt. We replace the glides, belt, and idler pulley as a kit because doing one at a time is twice the labor. One visit, two hours. -
Do you service Maytag top-freezer fridges?
Yes. MRT and MFI fail at the defrost thermostat and the evap fan motor. Both stocked, both 30-minute swaps.
